Medical Council probes allegations of misconduct

A consultant radiologist in Drogheda is facing nine allegations of professional misconduct.

THE IRISH MEDICAL Council is investigating nine allegations of professional misconduct against a consultant working at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, RTÉ reports.

The allegations against the consultant radiologist, 40-year-old Dr John Hanson from Malahide, Co Dublin, follow the death of a 23-year-old patient under his care in 2008.

Mark Haran, a business graduate from Co Meath, died of brain damage in April 2008.

The allegations against Hanson relate to the failure to diagnose hydrocephalus or intarcranial pressure; failed to communicate the extent of abnormalities in the MRI scan conducted on Haran; or to furnish a written report in an adequate time frame.

Before he passed away, Haran had visited hospital twice in the space of 10 days complaining of headaches, nausea and vertigo.

He was discharged the first time on the basis of an MRI scan.
