Mexico: 16 killed as pick-up truck ploughs into tractor-trailer

A pick-up truck packed with passengers crosses a busy freeway and hits a tractor-trailer before bursting into flames.

16 PEOPLE have been killed in Mexico after a pick-up truck packed with passengers went out of control and crossed a busy freeway before slamming into a tractor-trailer.

The accident occurred on the Caborca-Sonoyta state highway in the northern Mexican state of Sonora yesterday afternoon, Reuters said.

Officials said the Ford pick-up truck, which was carrying 14 people, burst into flames after it struck the tractor-trailer.

The Ford truck had been carrying 18 people, 14 of whom were killed.

AP said some of the dead could not be identified because the truck had burst into flames after the accident and the bodies had badly burned.

Two others on the tractor-trailer – its driver and his 10-year-old grandson – also died.

The four survivors from the pick-up truck – a man, a woman and two children – were hospitalised.
