Man, 30, held over fatal assault on Co Down man

David Mills, 47, was attacked at about 12:45am in the Dromore St area of Ballynahinch and died yesterday morning.

PSNI OFFICERS are questioning a 30-year-old man in connection with a serious assault that took the life of a man in Co Down in the early hours of yesterday morning.

David Mills, 47, was attacked at about 12:45am in the Dromore St area of Ballynahinch, Co Down. He suffered major head injuries and died later in hospital.

A 30-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon on suspicion of murder and is said to be assisting police with their inquiries.

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to contact them at Newtownards station.

Mills had previously played for Irish League sides Portadown and Lisburn Distillery, and was reported to have been socialising with members of a local cricket team on Saturday evening before he was attacked.

Politicians from both communities in Northern Ireland have condemned the assault and expressed shock at Mills’ death.
