It’s Holy Thursday, which means the pope washes the feet of a group every year in Rome.

But whose feet he washes has been a question that has antagonised Catholics.

Pope Leo XIV today washed the feet of 12 priests, but some have expressed upset that he is not continuing with his predecessor Francis’s custom of washing the feet of migrants and prisoners.

The dispute is another window into the ongoing struggle in the Church between opposing views of what direction it should take, as Diarmuid Pepper explains.
