Nibali TTs his way to Tirrano-Adriatico

The 2012 Giro champion overturned a six-second deficit to edge past 40-year-old Chris Horner on the final stage, a 9.3km time trial.

ITALIAN VINCENZO NIBALI (Liquigas-Cannondale) has claimed victory in this year’s Tirrano-Adriato stage race by a narrow 14-second margin over Radioshack-Nissan’s Chris Horner.

Horner, a 17-year veteran of the professional circuit, held the lead entering the final day, but ceded a decisive 20 seconds to Nibali in the 9.3km time trial.

While Nibali will no doubt be content with his overall victory, the performance of the day came courtesy of Leopard Trek’s Fabian Cancellara, a four-time world champion in the discipline. Covering the course in 10’36”, the Swiss ended the day with a 15-second advantage over teammate and fellow endurance specialist Daniele Bennati and a further second over Cameron Meyer of Australian outfit GreenEDGE.

The final general classification podium place went to Roman Kreuziger of Kazakh team Astana.
