LAST UPDATE | 5 hrs ago

OVER €5 MILLION worth of cannabis was seized by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and gardaí after the stop and search of a lorry travelling from Scotland to Larne Harbour.

The suspected cannabis was concealed within a large number of boxes.

A 53-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene, has since been charged.

A PSNI spokesperson said he has been charged with possession of a Class B controlled drug and possession with intent to supply.

He has also been charged with having no driving licence and using a vehicle without insurance.

He is due to appear before Antrim Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Organised Crime Branch worked in collaboration with An Garda Síochána National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau as part of the Joint Agency Task Force.

The Task Force was established in 2015 with the aim of bringing a concerted and enhanced effort to tackle cross-jurisdictional organised crime.

Its current priorities are tobacco and fuel smuggling, synthetic drugs, human trafficking, rural crime, financial crime and immigration.
