Poll: Should school summer holidays be shortened?

The UK’s Education Secretary is calling for longer term times – should that be considered in Ireland too?

SHOULD SCHOOL TERMS  be longer, thereby making school holidays shorter?

That is what the UK’s Education Secretary Michael Gove is looking for. He has said that although British schoolchildren have a six-week summer holiday, they are left lagging behind their peers in Europe, Journal Live reports.

In Ireland, primary schools typically have nine weeks’ summer holidays, while secondary schools have 12 weeks.

Some may argue that a long school summer holiday allows students of all ages to develop their knowledge and skills in other areas, while getting to make the most of their time outside of the classroom.

But others may say that pupils could benefit from more time at their desks focusing on their studies.

Should school summer holidays be shortened?
