PRESIDENT MICHAEL D HIGGINS is in Strasbourg today where he will address the European Parliament as part of Ireland’s six month Presidency of the European Union.
His 11am address, entitled “Towards a European Union of the Citizens”, will be followed by a joint press conference with the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.
Later today, President Higgins will meet with Irish Erasmus students, Irish members of the European Parliament and Irish officials working in the EU and Council of Europe institutions, and will conclude his visit with a guided tour of Strasbourg Cathedral.
The President will be accompanied by his wife, Sabina, and Minister of European Affairs Lucinda Creighton.
Creighton is also due to participate in a number of debates today, which look to address the current situation in both Hungary and Cyprus, and is also due to speak in the debate on multi-annual fisheries management plans.
