Man in his 70s dies cycling his bike in afternoon road crash

The collision happened at about 3.45pm this afternoon.

A MAN IN his 70s has died after the bicycle he was cycling was struck by a car in Co Westmeath this afternoon.

The collision happened at about 3.45pm on the N52 about 6 km north of Mullingar.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash before his body was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital.

The driver of a car was a woman who was also in her 70s and gardai say she was uninjured in the incident.

A post-mortem is expected to be carried out on the deceased man’s body tomorrow in Tullamore Hospital.

The road where the collision occurred is to remain closed tonight as garda investigators carry out a forensic examination.

Any witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact gardai.
