Greens shoot off as a former TD and an ex-Senator both leave the party

Deputy leader of the party Róisín Garvey has resigned from her role.

THE GREEN PARTY has confirmed that its deputy leader, Róisín Garvey, has resigned from her role.

It comes as former Green TD Brian Leddin also confirmed today that he has resigned from the party over its decision to support Catherine Connolly in the presidential election.

Garvey, who was appointed to the Seanad by Taoiseach Micheál Martin in 2020, became deputy leader of the Green Party in July 2024. She replaced TD Catherine Martin in the role.

Garvey failed to win a seat in the Clare constituency in 2024′s general election and subsequently did not contest the 2025 Seanad election two months later.

It is understood that Garvey has also resigned from the party, although it is unclear if her departure is linked to the party’s backing of Connolly in the presidential election.

Party members were informed of Garvey’s resignation by email yesterday morning.

A party spokesperson told The Journal that Garvey stepped down as deputy leader and spokesperson due to a new position that she has taken up.

Wishing Garvey well, the spokesperson said she was a “powerful voice for rural Ireland within the party”.

“She took a council seat for us in north Clare in 2019 and represented the party with distinction in the Seanad.

“She was a tireless activist for the party and a relentless voice against any division between environmental and rural interests – all in the party will remember her televised battle with Michael Healy-Rae from last year fondly,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, writing an op-ed for the Irish Times today, former Green TD Brian Leddin said he was resigning from the party and would be voting for Heather Humphreys on 24 October.

“That [the party] would back a candidate of the far left in the presidential run was unthinkable only a few months ago,” Leddin wrote.

Party leader TD Roderic O’Gorman told reporters that while he fundamentally disagreed with what Leddin had to say in the op-ed, he is “disappointed” he left the party.

The Green Party is still in “rebuild” mode after last year’s bruising general election, O’Gorman said today.

The party lost all but one of its 12 Dáil seats in the election, with O’Gorman retaining his seat.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Noonan was the sole Green to win a seat in the Seanad election earlier this year.
