Meet RTÉ's new London correspondent...

… Fiona Mitchell is from originally from Offaly and has been with the organisation for more than a decade.

RTÉ HAS ANNOUNCED the appointment of Fiona Mitchell as its London Correspondent.

This comes after the organisation announced last month that they would be reinstating the position, having previously axed it in 2012.

Mitchell is currently working as their Deputy Foreign Editor. In her new role she will be responsible for reporting across all platforms – including radio, web based media and television.

Fiona Mitchell

She is originally from Tullamore in Co Offaly and has been with the organisation since 2000.

In her 14 years of service she has worked with the ‘Morning Ireland’ programme and on the Foreign Desk. In 2006 she was appointed News Editor.

Some of the stories she has worked on in recent years have included the resignation of Pope Benedict, the State visit of Michael D. Higgins to the UK and the Scottish independence referendum.

“Thrilled”

Speaking today, Managing Director of RTÉ News and Current Affairs Kevin Bankhurst, said that the move was aimed at ensuring the network’s coverage of the upcoming UK 2015 General Election as well as the country’s future in the European Union.

On her appointment, Mitchell said:

I am thrilled to take on the role of London Correspondent at such a hugely interesting time in British life and politics. I relish the opportunity to bring that story to the RTE audience and re-establish the RTE presence in the UK.

Cutting costs

The reappointment of a London Correspondent by the organisation comes as part of cost-cutting restructuring.

As part of this Mitchell will be using self-shooting and self-editing skills along with a freelance camera crew when necessary.
