IF YOU’RE AT least a semi-regular listener of RTÉ Radio 1, you may have noticed a change of tune recently.
Earlier this month, the station updated its usual catalogue of music across its shows and replaced many familiar theme tunes with a new set of jingles.
According to RTÉ, the move is intended to present a “fully unified audio identity for the station”, with the new music designed “to further strengthen its appeal to audiences and maintain the station as Ireland’s first choice for radio”.
UK audio agency WiseBuddah led the change, with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra contributing to elements of the recordings.
However, the response from listeners has been mixed. Some Liveline callers expressed their dissatisfaction with the change. One described the previous music as “integral” to the station, quoting the phrase: “If it isn’t broken…”.
Many listeners were particularly struck by the loss of Sunday Miscellany’s iconic brass theme tune, Galliard Battaglia by Samuel Scheidt. In The Irish Independent, Brenda Power wrote: “I feel like someone has broken into my house and stolen my Sunday.”
Writing in The Irish Times, Ed Power highlighted how noticeable the shift is for regular audiences, describing the music as “part of the background of our everyday lives”.
The new music hasn’t been spared from becoming a topic of online discussion, with one Reddit user saying: “The original was great, no need to change!”
Another said that it reminds them “of being on hold”.
Members of The Journal’s news team also offered their takes: “The end of the Morning Ireland one sounds like something from Gladiator.”
“They all remind me a lot of my alarms. It’s a no from me.”
With many opinions circulating, we want to know your thoughts.
