Samsung takes first steps away from Android by announcing first Tizen smartphone
Tizen is Samsung’s homegrown operating system which will make its debut on the Samsung Z in Russia later this year.
SAMSUNG HAS ANNOUNCED it will start selling a new smartphone which will run on its own homegrown operating system (OS).
The new OS, called Tizen, will run on the Samsung Z and will be released in Russia in the third quarter, with plans to expand to other markets. It’s expected that the smartphone will sell at a lower price than the iPhone or similar Android devices as it targets an emerging smartphone market.
The company will also launch a dedicated Tizen store which will sell software and services on the device.
The move will mark the first time Samsung has decided not to use Android to power its devices. While Samsung is one of the biggest smartphone providers in the world, it still relies on Android for the user experience.
The announcement comes before a Tizen developer conference which backers, like Samsung and Intel, are holding in San Francisco tomorrow.
The Samsung Z has a 4.8-inch screen as well as an 8MB camera. Much like the Galaxy S5, it will also feature a built-in fingerprint sensor and an ‘Ultra Power Saving Mode’, which extends the battery life significantly by turning off all features expect calls and texts.
The company’s latest smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear 2, also runs on Tizen instead of Android.
