Queen Elizabeth’s itinerary is rich with historical significance – with stops including the National War Memorial Garden and Croke Park. We look at the past events associated with some of her stops.

AS WE ALL KNOW, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth is spending the next four days taking in the sights and sounds of Ireland.

Writing in TheJournal.ie earlier this week, Eleanor Fitzsimons spoke of Ireland’s ”uniquely complex relationship” with Britain and asked the question: What have the Brits ever done for us?

In that same spirit, we’ve taken a look at the Queen’s itinerary for today and the next three days to explore the historical significance of some of the destinations, and get a better understanding of Ireland’s relationship with its closest neighbour.

Tuesday 17 May

  • Arrival at Casement Aerodrome
  • Meeting President and Dr McAleese at Áras an Uachtaráin
  • Wreath-laying ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance
  • Trip to view Book of Kells at TCD

Wednesday 18 May

  • “Windows” tour of Dublin at the Guinness Storehouse
  • Meeting the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, at Government Buildings
  • Wreath-laying ceremony at the Irish National War Memorial Garden, Islandbridge
  • Visit to Croke Park
  • State dinner at Dublin Castle

Thursday 19 May

  • Visit to National Stud, Kildare
  • The Duke of Edinburgh will attend a reception at Farmleigh House with recipients of Gaisce – the President’s Award
  • Celebration of Queen’s visit at the Convention Centre Dublin
