Should there be a standalone offence for crimes against retail workers?

A FINE GAEL TD has suggested that a specific offence for crimes against retail staff should be introduced.
James Geoghegan said a rise in “unacceptable abuse and intimidation” directed at workers is putting the retail sector at risk and requires “firm action”.
Geoghegan referenced a survey by Retail Ireland, which found that seven in ten retail workers said they have experienced abusive behaviour and language from customers.
“Far too many retail workers experience abuse every week in shops and stores around the country,” Geoghegan said.
“This legislation must be part of a broader effort to eliminate crime and intimidation in our capital,” he added.
Similar legislation has been introduced in Scotland and according to its government, just over 500 charges have been made for offences against retail workers.
