Sulphuric acid tanker capsizes in Germany

Two people are missing after a ship transporting 2,400 tons of acid capsized on the Rhine this morning.

EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE searching for two people who went missing when a tanker carrying 2,400 tons of sulphuric acid capsized on the Rhine River near St Goarshausen, Germany.

Early tests indicate that the acid is not leaking from the ship.

Authorities do not know why it capsized, Der Spiegel quotes the AP.

Two of the tanker’s four crew members have been missing since this morning, and rescue crews are using thermal imaging cameras in their search.

The Rhine is one of Europe’s busiest transport rivers, and this morning’s accident has forced its closure. This tanker was travelling from southern Germany to Antwerp in Belgium, according to the PA.
