GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY evening, TheJournal.ie brings you the five things you need to know by 5pm.

1. #SPENDING CUTS: Proposals for the Metro North and DART underground transport projects in Dublin have been shelved but the construction of the National Children’s Hospital will go ahead, the Government announced today as it outlined its €17 billion Infrastructure and Capital Investment programme for the next five years.

2. #BODY FOUND: Gardaí are trying to establish the identity of a man in his 40s whose body was pulled from the sea at the Cliffs of Moher yesterday afternoon. As part of the investigation, Gardaí searched a house in Roscommon this morning and found a woman in 50s who had been seriously assaulted.

3. #PRIESTS’ PAY: Catholic priests in Dublin could have their incomes cut by up to 9 per cent this year because of falling returns from church collections which provide for their salaries.

4. #EUROZONE: Greece has finally named its new prime minister with former European Central Bank VP Lucas Papademos confirmed as the man to lead a unity government. Meanwhile, the cost of Italian borrowing fell this morning but remains close to 7 per cent – a figure deemed “unsustainable” in the long-term.

5. #MONEY ART: An Andy Warhol painting was sold at a New York auction for €575,240 last night. The seller? NAMA. The piece? ‘Dollar Note‘. Appropriately, the painting of a dollar sign was seized by the so-called bad bank from a developer – understood to be Derek Quinlan – in order to help him pay his debts to the agency.
