The 9 at 9 Ireland’s imported fossil fuel dependence, and chants in Eurovision arena as Israel go through to the final.

LAST UPDATE | 5 mins ago

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know to start the day.

Data centres

1. Ireland is “exposed to global energy shocks” as a result of its dependence on imported fossil fuels, according to the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC). In its report published this morning, the Council said data centres continue “cannibalising” Ireland’s renewables.

Keir Starmer

2. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces growing pressure following the resignation of four government ministers and is meeting today with one of his biggest leadership rivals, Wes Streeting.

Eurovision

3. Israel is through to the Eurovision final on Saturday, along with nine other countries. Chants of ‘stop the genocide’ were heard during last night’s semi-final. Ireland, along with four other nations, is boycotting the event in Vienna, which sees heightened security and controversy this year.

Vandalism

4. An arson attack on McAuley Park in Artane, Co Dublin, on Monday night has been condemned as “disgraceful”. The targeting of the park, which has been in use for 12 months, is “deeply upsetting for local families”.

Oliver Bond flats

5. The Housing Department says funding “remains in place” for the regeneration of Oliver Bond House, but that Dublin City Council must revise its proposal. Dublin City Councillors have condemned the decision to halt the planned regeneration of the flats, calling the conditions “barely habitable”.

Nenagh

6. A woman in her 20s has died following a two-vehicle collision in Co Tipperary. The incident happened at around 9pm last night on the Nenagh to Dromineer Road R495.

West Bank

7. Irish MEP Barry Andrews has described the governance of the occupied West Bank as a “brutal system of apartheid”. He said it was ”much worse” than he expected after travelling through the region last week.

Road safety

8. A doctor who was injured in a hit-and-run while cycling, losing his right ear, speaks of Ireland’s “dysfunctional” system of road safety oversight. He spent nine months in hospital, and can no longer practice as a GP.

Environmental Protection Agency

9. The new Dún Laoghaire baths were the only one of Ireland’s 153 bathing sites classified as “poor” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The classification was given to the site due to wastewater overflows and dog fouling. The baths reopened in 2022, and this is their first classification.
