GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are nine things you want to know as you start your day.

EACH DAY, TheJournal.iebrings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #WATCHDOG: The Garda Ombudsman has accused An Garda Síochána of providing “misleading” and “incorrect” information to the watchdog during its investigations into alleged police brutality during student protests in Dublin in 2010. The Ombudsman’s report said the behaviour of the force “considerably delayed and hindered” its investigation.

2. #EGYPT: Human Rights Watch has condemned the deaths of more than 70 people in violence that erupted at protests in Egypt yesterday, accusing authorities of a “criminal disregard for people’s lives”. Meanwhile, the United States has called on the divided country to “come back from the brink”.

3. #ALCOHOL BAN: The coalition is continuing to discuss the details of a package of measures aimed at banning alcohol sponsorship in sport. Ideas for replacing the revenue lost reportedly include a special alcohol tax or exchequer grants, however Fine Gael have so far failed to agree on a date for the scheme’s implementation, according to The Sunday Times.

4. #ARREARS: The Central Bank has issued new guidelines to lenders dealing with mortgage-holders in arrears, in which lenders are warned to engage in a clear and expedient way with borrowers – and to propose solutions to distressed debtors – The Sunday Business Post reports.

5. #TRAIN CRASH: The driver of a train that hurtled off the rails killing 78 people in Spain last week has been discharged from hospital and will appear before a judge for questioning today, facing possible charges of reckless homicide.

6. #DUBLIN: Gardaí have launched an investigation after a man in his late 20s was shot in Kinsealy, north Dublin, last night.

7. #REAL ESTATE: Developers who hang on to prime sites in Dublin in the hopes that their values will rise should face penalties, the city’s new Lord Mayor has told TheJournal.ie. However, Oisín Quinn said developers could be given a break from any new levies if they permitted unused spaces to be used for civic-minded projects.

8. #POPE: Pope Francis addressed a crowd of an estimated 2 million people in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last night – urging young people to become “athletes of Christ”.

9. #CROAGH PATRICK: Thousands of people are expected to gather in Mayo today for the yearly Croagh Patrick pilgrimage. Ahead of the event, Archbishop Michael Neary said that this year would celebrate the Gathering, saying: “We are welcoming back, enabling people to re-establish contact with their roots.”
