1. #MURDER: A 40 year-old woman is still being held by gardaí in Drogheda after 30-year-old Wayne McQuillan was stabbed to death in Drogheda in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

2. #PROPERTY: The divergence in price between Dublin properties and national market is continuing to grow, according to the latest report by MyHome.ie. The average asking price nationally is now €189,000.

3. #EXPLOSION: Police in Prague say that an explosion that killed the Palestinian ambassador to the Czech, Jamal Al Jamal, Republic yesterday was likely caused by the explosion of an anti-theft system on a safe he was opening.

4. #SOUTH SUDAN: The UN has called for an immediate ceasefire in South Sudan following more than two weeks of violence in South Sudan, which has left more than 1,000 people dead.

5. #WEATHER: Met Éireann is warning people to expect no let-up in the rain and strong winds which have hit parts of the country over the past week with an Orange Alert gale warning issued in the early hours of this morning.

6. #WATER: Irish Water – which came into operation yesterday – says almost 80,000 households have so far been fitted with water meters, ahead of charges commencing from this October.

7. #ANTARCTICA: An air-rescue operation for a Russian research vessel, which as been trapped in Antarctic ice since Christmas Eve, began this morning.

8. #INDIA: Clashes broke out in Kolkata between police and members of the opposition Communist Party of India following the death of a 16-year-old girl who had been gang raped. The girl was attacked twice in October by the same alleged gang, which her family say have political links, and died after setting herself on fire, reports Al Jazeera.

9. #PHILANTHROPY: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was the America’s biggest philanthropist of 2013 – after he donated almost $1 billion, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
