In the day’s other news…

  • Much of Ireland has been battered by gales and driving rain today, with a number of disruptions. Flights to and from Dublin Airport have resumed this evening after they were stopped earlier by 100kph winds on the runways.
  • Former Anglo chairman David Drumm’s $4million mansion in Cape Cod has been sold off to pay his creditors – including Anglo itself, which has been pursuing Drumm for around €8million.
  • The bailout and its associated budget measures are taking money from the poor and vulnerable to pay off the banks’ gambles – that’s according to Social Justice Ireland, who met with the IMF/EU/ECB ‘troika’ today.
  • Families have been packing their belongings and leaving the Priory Hall apartment complex in north Dublin, after being ordered to evacuate over fire safety concerns. They were today given an additional three days to vacate their homes by a High Court judge who said “We haven’t seen this situation in Ireland in recent centuries”, RTÉ reports.
  • The world’s first commercial spaceport has opened in New Mexico, run by Virgin Galactic – which hopes to operate its first flight into space within the next year.
  • The UK House of Commons has been debating the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans were killed. Some 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for all documents relating to the disaster to be publicly released.
  • Were you looking for a ticket to the Ireland-Estonia game next month? If so, we hope you were one of the lucky ones when they sold out in just half an hour this morning.
  • It’s not just fool’s gold: legendary ‘Madchester’ band the Stone Roses really are set to reunite 15 years after their acrimonious split, according to reports. We’ve been putting on our baggiest trousers and looking back at five of their best tunes.
  • You probably know that would-be US Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is the former boss of Italian fast-food chain Godfather’s. But did you know that he once took the mic to sing “Imagine there’s no pizza” to the tune of John Lennon’s iconic hit? Now that’s what we call presidential. (Singing begins around 0.42).
