• The captain of the cruise ship that ran aground off the Italian coast this morning, killing at least three people, and one other crew member have been detained by police following this morning’s tragedy.
• Gardaí in Wexford are appealing for information about a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Rosslare Harbour this morning. A 76-year-old man lost his life in the incident.
• The Army Bomb Disposal Team was deployed to a beach in Kerry earlier today to make safe a number of old artillery shells that were discovered there. The shells found on Rossbeigh Beach, near Glenbeigh, appeared to date from the early part of last century.
• Burma has received warm approval internationally for its decision to release 651 political prisoners, with the United States immediately announcing it would upgrade diplomatic relations with the country. Norway also decided to respond positively to the news, saying it would no longer urge Norwegian companies “to refrain from trade and investment in Burma.”
• Dublin City Council are to stop bin collection services this Monday: a changeover will see Greyhound services take over the council’s bin services and subject residents to a pre-pay system. The council has been criticised for leaving residents “in the dark” about a bin service changeover.
• All eyes in Hungary are on President Pal Schmitt today, after the country’s leading economic weekly accused him of copying almost all of his PhD thesis. A similar accusation in Germany last year led to the resignation of the state’s Defence Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.

• Lawyer Patrick Russel has become the first barrister to be struck off the bar in Ireland in ten years, after being found guilty of professional misconduct.
