THINGS WE LEARNED

#HORSEMEAT Swedish company Ikea has withdrawn some of its meatballs from sale in at least 15 European countries, including Ireland, after horsemeat was found in the product by Czech authorities. The company said that its own tests haven’t shown any traces of horsemeat.

#CATHERINE GOWING Clive Sharp has been sentenced to life for the murder of Irish vet Catherin Gowing in Wales last year. The 47-year-old murdered Gowing, who was his girlfriend’s flatmate, before disposing of her body. Gowing’s sister Emma said that the sentence means ‘our world is a safer place’.

#CROKE PARK The first steps on extending and amending the terms of the Croke Park pay deal were made today by the Government and trade unions representing public service workers. The news came after a final 13-hour session of talks which followed the withdrawal of four unions from negotiations last night. Here is a run down of what is in the proposed public pay deal.

#CARLOW A garda investigation has been opened after the bodies of a man and a woman were found in a premises on Centaur St in Carlow Town. They are both believed to be in their 50s. Gardaí are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to contact them.

#OSCARS The Onion has apologised for an ‘offensive’ tweet about the young actress Quvenzhané Wallis. The satirical newspaper referred to Willis with an expletive in a tweet which was deleted within an hour, and the Onion CEO Steve Hannah apologised for it being “crude and offensive”.
