The Golden Globes are tonight and Ireland's got a shot - here's everything you need to know

Which films are nominated, who are the favourites and where can you watch?

HOLLYWOOD’S AWARDS SEASON gets into full swing tonight with the Golden Globes ceremony, where Irish actors are expected to be real contenders.

Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal are nominated for their roles in Hamnet for best female actor and best supporting actor respectively.

The awards show, now in its 83rd year, is taking place in Los Angeles and will air live on CBS at 5pm California time. For Ireland, that’s 1am on Monday morning.

There’ll be a star-studded lineup of presenters too – including Amanda Seyfried, Ayo Edebiri, Charli xcx, Chris Pine, George Clooney and Jennifer Garner, to name a few – who’ll be announcing the winners.

Unfortunately, there is no way for Irish-based cinephiles to legally stream the ceremony live.

However, highlights of the ceremony (which is usually over 3 hours long) will be shown on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player on Monday at 9pm.

Comedian Nikki Glaser will return as host of the gala.

Kerry-born Buckley already won best actress at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards last week, which indicates she has a good chance of bringing home more titles this season.

Her film Hamnet, a historical drama, is based on the book by author Maggie O’Farrell, who is from Coleraine, Co Derry. She also got a globe nod alongside director Chloé Zhao in the Best Screenplay category.

The film explores the relationship between William Shakespeare (Mescal) and his wife Agnes Hathaway (Buckley) in the aftermath of their 11-year-old son’s death.

Its biggest competition in the best drama category is Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s searing period horror film about the segregated South of the 1930s.

Separately, the comedy-drama Blue Moon, which was filmed in Ireland and produced in association with Wild Atlantic Pictures, is up for best musical or comedy and best male actor in a musical or comedy for Ethan Hawke’s performance.

One Battle After Another is up for nine awards and is expected to come out on top this season.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s screwball thriller, which follows an aging revolutionary (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his teenage daughter (Chase Infiniti), features violent leftist radicals, immigration raids and white supremacists.

At a time when the United States is deeply polarised, many critics and pundits have hailed the film as capturing the moment.

DiCaprio will vie for best actor with Timothee Chalamet, who boosted his Oscars campaign with a win at the Critics Choice Awards for his star turn in Marty Supreme as an ambitious 1950s table tennis player.

Teyana Taylor, who plays an unapologetically bold leftist revolutionary, could fuel a sweep for One Battle if she can pick up the prize for best supporting actress.

But in her way are Amy Madigan for her wacky villainous turn in Weapons and Ariana Grande for her portrayal of Glinda in the blockbuster Wicked: For Good.

Sentimental Value, the Norwegian family dramedy starring Stellan Skarsgard, earned a strong eight nominations, is also in the running.
