Union welcomes intervention of Oireachtas Committee in Vodafone dispute
The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture has invited Vodafone to appear before them.
THE COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS’ Union (CWU) has welcomed a move by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture to intervene in its current dispute with Vodafone.
The mobile phone service company recently announced its decision to export 300 customer care jobs at Dublin and Dundalk to Newry, Co Down.
The CWU has objected to the move, highlighting that the decision comes just one year after Vodafone exported more than 140 jobs to locations in Egypt and India.
Acting on foot of a request by 15 Oireachtas members, the Committee has asked Vodafone to attend a meeting to explain these decisions over the last 12 months – which are expected to result in almost 500 customer care jobs servicing its Irish customer base being exported.
The company has invited employees to transfer, but says it recognises that not every employee can relocate.
