Visitor restrictions continuing at Tipperary University Hospital to reduce Norovirus spread

Noroviruses are very contagious and can spread easily from person to person – it is one of the most common causes of stomach bugs.

TIPPERARY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL in Clonmel is continuing to implement visitor restrictions until further notice in order to reduce the spread of Norovirus.

The HSE Dublin and South East has indicated that visiting will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances by arrangement with the clinical nurse manager or the nurse in charge. Exceptions will be made on the ward for end of life and critically ill patients.

Hospital management and staff have apologised for any inconvenience caused to patients and visitors this Easter.

“These measures are vital to avoid spreading Norovirus amongst patients, visitors and staff. Tipperary University Hospital thanks the public for their co-operation and understanding at this time.”

Noroviruses are very contagious and can spread easily from person to person. It is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis (stomach bugs). It is currently circulating at very high levels in the community.

For most people it is an unpleasant but mild illness that passes off quickly without any treatment. It can usually be managed at home — drinking plenty of fluids is normally all that is needed. However, if vulnerable patients are infected, the consequences can be very serious.

Persons with Norovirus are urged to stay off work for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have passed. Further information can be obtained about Norovirus at https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/norovirus/
