A WOMAN AND MAN, both aged in their 80s, have passed away following road collisions earlier this month.

The woman was hospitalised following a five-vehicle collision on the M1 near Drogheda. 

Gardaí and emergency services responded to the collision on the M1 Northbound at Platin, just before the toll bridge, shortly after 11.10am. 

Three people were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for treatment. One of those, the woman in her 80s, has since died. 

The coroner has been notified and a postmortem examination will take place in due course.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

Sepatately, a pedestrian in his 80s died yesterday after being struck by a vehicle in Ennis, Co Clare earlier this month.

The collision occurred in the Abbey Street area of Ennis on Monday 8 December at approximately 1pm.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, and pronounced dead yesterday.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them, and investigations are ongoing.

Elsewhere yesterday, a male motorcyclist in his 20s is in critical condition following a serious collision on the R730 at Killurin, Co Wexford.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the collision, involving a car and a motorcycle at approximately 11.45pm.

The motorcyclist was taken to Wexford General Hospital for treatment and has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital. No other injuries were reported. 

The road has been closed for a technical examination. Local diversions are in place.
