Gardaí discovered the arms dump during searches in the Scotstown area.

Updated at 4.05pm

GARDAÍ HAVE RECOVERED firearms and bomb parts in an operation targeting dissident republican activity in the border region.

AK47 assault rifles, mortars, detonators, detonating cord and other improvised explosive device (IED) parts were seized during searches in the Scotstown area of Co Monaghan last week.

The operation comes after a 43-year-old man was arrested in the area last Wednesday under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

He was subsequently charged with IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

Gardaí said the searches were carried out by members of their special detective team, armed emergency response unit and dog handlers, as well as local officers from the Cavan/Monaghan division.

The army bomb disposal team was deployed to assist with the operation at 2.45pm on 26 November and continued to provide support until 4pm on 30 November.

All items discovered were made safe and handed over to gardaí, the Defence Forces said.

Further searches are ongoing.
