SYRIAN STATE MEDIA is reporting an explosion in a residential area of the country’s second city, Aleppo.

SANA says that a number of deaths and injuries have been caused by a “terrorist bombing” in the al-Sulaymaniyah district, but has not reported further details on the explosion.

Dozens of people were killed in car bomb blasts in Aleppo last month.

Today’s report follows a double bombing in Syria’s capital Damascus yesterday in which at least 27 people were killed and 100 injured, according to state media. Reuters reports that security forces broke up a crowd of around 200 people gathered today for a rare protest in Damascus against President Assad’s rule.

Meanwhile, Syrian officials today announced the discovery of ammunition and explosives in Idlib, where government forces have been shelling areas understood to be strongholds of the uprising against Assad.

The UN estimates that over 8,000 people have been killed since the uprising – and the government’s subsequent crackdown – began a year ago.
