Mary Boyle case: Gardaí conclude search of land in Donegal

The six-year-old disappeared while visiting her grandparents in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal on 18 March 1977.

Updated at 7.30pm

A GARDA SEARCH at a patch of land in Donegal has concluded.

It was confirmed earlier that officers had begun a dig in the county in connection with the case of Mary Boyle.

The six-year-old disappeared while visiting her grandparents in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal on 18 March 1977.

It is believed the land where the search took place is close to where Mary was last seen.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the Garda cold case unit would be reviewing all of the details related to the case.

However, it is understood this dig was carried out by local units, not national gardaí.

The Garda Press Office said earlier this week that the case had never been closed, and that it was planned a Serious Crime Review team would re-examine evidence.

Mary’s sister Ann Doherty has been working with Margo O’Donnell, sister of singer Daniel and a distant cousin of Mary Boyle, along with journalist Gemma O’Doherty in a bid to bring those responsible to justice.

O’Doherty last week posted a documentary she had made on the case to YouTube, telling TheJournal.ie it had received a “phenomenal” reaction.

A Garda spokesperson said this evening that the press office had no details of any further searches planned at the site. It’s understood no new evidence was uncovered today.

With reporting from Daragh Brophy. Comments are disabled on this post as there is an ongoing Garda investigation.
