The Mayans didn’t use the Gregorian calendar so that’s irrelevant

It is relevant, because it means their calendar was inaccurate by approximately one quarter of a day, every year for over 5000 years!

No Jimboandbear, the Mayan did take into account as you say 1/4 day per year, they in fact calculated this to a far greater accuracy than we bother to even use today so again my first reply was accurate, while they did not use the Gregorian calendar as it hadn’t been invented yet they most certainly did take the extra hours per year into account. Even the Gregorian calendar is out a day every 3,236 years or about 27 seconds a year.

Simply put the Leap Year is only a concept known to the Gregorian calendar which has been in use since 1580 or so.

Oh really? So did the Mayans have atomic clocks and leap seconds incorporated into their calendars? Didn’t think so.

People knew the Earth was round on this side of the planet since the time of the ancient Greeks, not a few hundred years ago.
We knew the colours of the planets for a long, long time, because you can see the colours with the naked eye.

No jimboandbear I personally don’t celebrate Christmas, no tree, dont send card or buy presents. never have. but I do find it funny the amount of people that shun religion but also Hippocraticly celebrate it at every opportunity xmas, easter, ect. What is your obsession with what people do and don’t celebrate anyway? And who are you to know what they are celebrating or to judge them for doing so?

I get holidays at Christmas time just like everyone else. I spend it with my family, just like everyone else. There is no religion involved in the way in which I spend what we on the modern western world refer to as the christmas period. All of the traditions are either pagan or secular, from the tree decorating to the gift giving and the turkey dinner.

To fixate on it is very childish. To refer to it as hypocritical is to be ignorant of the meaning of the world hypocrite.

True, nasa dont know about volcanos etc, but most of the predictions come from the galaxy, but why would there be earthquakes or volcanos tomorrow.

With the mayans calender ending it has just got out of control, people are coming up with there own predictions and spreading them all over the net.

I even seen a nasa scientist say children as young as 11 are contacting him and nasa, saying they are going to commit suicide and even a mother said her and her husband were going to kill themselves and there kids.

The mayans themselves never said the world was going to end, and this is where it all started.

earthquakes happen with no notice at all otherwise people could be evacuated…… hence why a 10 pointer quake off the scale is overdue and possible.

@ Joey: I mentioned planets because most of the theories about the world ending involve a collision with a celestial object. A large earthquake would be damaging but in no way the end of the world. A supervolcano could be very damaging but would probably not wipe out the human race and certainly not destroy the planet itself. Maybe today, maybe the next 100,000 years.

If, as you correctly point out, NASA can’t predict earthquakes or eruptions, I sincerely doubt any previous civilisation had the ability to do so. But to return to my original point, only a celestial object collision on a massive scale would destroy the planet and I refer you to my original point, i.e. there isn’t an object like that due to hit us tomorrow. Please refrain from calling people “dull”.

Digital clocks have leakage and have to be reset because they cant keep accurate time

I don’t disagree that the Mayans were an amazing people who were very advanced for their time. Some of the Mayans caculations are incredible but some are incredibly wrong. For example they believed that the world began in around 3114 BC and their calendar start from that date. This is why the current version of the Long Year calendar ends tomorrow.

By the way the ancient Greeks knew that the world wasn’t flat well before the Mayans. Eratosthenes of Cyrene calculated the circumference of the Earth to with 2% of accuracy back in around 230BC. Some Greeks also postulated that the Sun revolved around the Earth. We knew all this information in Europe well before the Mayans but the Church chose to supress it because it didn’t fit with their narrative.

On a final note it should also be pointed out that there is nowhere in Mayan writings that predicts the end of the world at any point in time.

Wrong. It is a complete myth that people thought the earth was flat a few hundred years ago. Nobody in columbus’s time thought the world was flat.

The earth casts a round shadow on the moon for starters. But it was Erastothenes of Cyrene who first discovered the world was round by observing the shadows of obiliscs in Ancient Egypt. Not only that but he figured out the curvature and circumference of the earth with very good accuracy.

Big deal. All ancient civilisations were interested in astronomy going back to stone age times.

You’ve been (badly) misinformed.

Actually, our modern atomic clocks are orders of magnitude better at keeping time than any mechanism from the ancient world. The pyramids that were built were large but could quite easily be built using modern construction (they would be difficult, but only because all large buildings involve difficulties). Relatively speaking the pyramid is a fairly simple form of construction compared to say, a suspension bridge. The colours of at least some of the planets can actually be seen by an average observer using the naked eye.

Also, while Eratosthenes did some amazing calculations as to the circumference of the Earth and Aristarchos posited heliocentrism, the main reason that heliocentrism didn’t take off is because it did not fit into the systems of Plato or Aristotle.

Hope this clarifies some of stuff. Mayans and Greeks were quite brilliant but trammelled by the technological deficiencies of their time.
