A MOUNTJOY PRISON OFFICER has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison while on his way to work this morning, Newstalk reports.
The 39-year-old man was stopped at a search area at the Dublin prison’s entrance.
A quantity of drugs including cocaine, cannabis and heroin were found in his possession.
The Irish Prison service has said it is determined to clamp down on drugs getting into the prison. RTÉ reports that this is the second drug seizure at the prison in as many days, after drugs thrown into the women’s prison at the weekend.
Last week, the Irish Examiner reported that a former prison officer lost his appeal against a four-year sentence for smuggling heroin, alcohol and other banned substances into Mountjoy.
