Pupil at centre of row doesn't have to take religion class - but must stay in room

The issue made national headlines yesterday. The school’s board of management met last night.

THE SECONDARY SCHOOL student at the centre of a religion class row in Co Limerick will be allowed opt out of the subject, but will have to stay in the room.

The issue made headlines yesterday, both locally and in the national media – and the board of management at Castletroy College met last evening to discuss it.

The school had rejected a request from the girl’s father to opt out.

In a brief statement issued after meeting, the school confirmed the first year student would have to remain in the classroom while the subject was being taught, but wouldn’t have to participate.

The school said the girl’s father had been informed, Live 95 FM reports.
