Shameless plug alert! Presenting TheJournal.ie’s iPhone and iPad apps

We’ve just launched our iPhone and iPad apps, giving you more ways to keep up with the news you need to know on the go.

SORRY TO INTERRUPT your regular news with a self-promoting story but we’ve just gotten some good news and we wanted to share it with you.

This afternoon our official apps for iPhone and for iPad got their approval from Apple – meaning that they’ve just been added to the App Store.

That means if you’ve got an iPod Touch, an iPhone or an iPad – an iAnything, basically – you can download TheJournal.ie’s official apps from the App Store right now, for free.

To get you started, though, here’s our quick tour of our apps:

Shameless plug alert! Presenting TheJournal.ie’s iPhone and iPad apps

  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (01)

Firing up the App from your iPhone delivers you straight to our homepage showing you the latest stories on our site.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (02)

Each one is presented just as it would be on the desktop site - showing you how many times it's been shared, Twittered, viewed and commented upon.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (03)

Each one is presented just as it would be on the desktop site - showing you how many times it's been shared, Twittered, viewed and commented upon.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (04)

If you just hit the arrow in the top-right corner, you'll be given the option to switch between any of our four publications: TheJournal.ie, TheScore.ie, Business ETC and The Daily Edge.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (05)

The app retains all the functionality of the full site - so you can vote in our daily polls, for instance, as well as do everything else you can usually do on the main site.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (06)

Voting in a poll through your phone, for example, will automatically show you the current poll results - just as it does on our desktop site.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (07)

Pieces with slideshows come with a special 'lightbox' mode so you can open up a gallery and zoom through the images, simply by shifting your thumb to the left or right.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (08)

See the little camera icon in the top-left? That's how you can send us your news - including photos or video - on the phone.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (09)

Just hit the button, choose the photo or video you want to send, and send us your message. It's as simple as that.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (10)

Once your photo or video has been sent, you'll be given a confirmation message to show it's been sent.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (11)

In keeping with the full-features mode of the app, you can also post comments to any story of your choosing through the App.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (12)

The iPad version of our app is quite similar - open it up and the most recent stories immediately appear; using the tabs at the bottom you can navigate through to the most popular or top featured stories.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (13)

Just as with the iPhone app, you can hit the arrow in the top right to change between any of our four publications.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (14)

Each story opens up just as it would on the main site itself, but in a slightly tidier small-screen-friendly format.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (15)

To make the best use of the iPad's screen, you can tap on any slideshow and it opens in a 'lightbox' mode.
  • TheJournal.ie's iPhone and iPad apps (16)

Again, you just need to flick your fingers to the left or right to glide through our galleries - just as you would with your own photos. That way, you can look at Greek riots/cute baby rhinos/whatever takes your fancy as quickly and as easily as you like.

You can download our free apps right now for iPad and for iPod/iPhone just by clicking those links. Remember that if apps aren’t your thing, there’s always our mobile-friendly site: just visit www.thejournal.ie from your mobile browser and it should load automatically.

If you have any thoughts on our apps or suggestions on how to improve them, we’d love to hear from you.
