Police in contact with gardaí over unidentified man found in river

The PSNI recovered the body of a man from the water at Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast last Friday.

POLICE IN BELFAST are renewing their appeal for information one week on from recovering the body of a man from the water at Shaw’s Bridge in the south of the city.

The body was discovered last Friday.

The PSNI has checked the man’s fingerprints against the Northern Ireland and UK databases, checked missing people reports, checked with hospitals and liaised with An Garda Síochána in a bid to identify the man.

The man is believed to have been in his 50s, around 5′ 8″ tall and was wearing a black t-shirt, navy blue jeans, a dark-coloured belt, and navy shoes in a men’s size 10.

“This male was not carrying any identification, was not wearing any distinctive jewellery, nor does he have any tattoos or piercings,” PSNI detective inspector Richard Thornton said.

“He was, however, wearing two compression bandages on his left upper arm, and bore an appendix scar.

We are hoping these few details may strike a chord with someone and help us to find out who this man is.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The PSNI has received just over 30 reports from the public relating to the incident. Each one has been investigated and eliminated from the enquiries.

Thornton asked for anyone who believes they know this man’s identity to get in touch on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 522 of 14/7/17.
