2,900 more signing on to Live Register in June

Standardised unemployment rate rose slightly in this month compared with May, and of the 2,900 extra people signing on, 2,000 were men.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT rate rose slightly from 14.1 per cent in May to 14.2 per cent in June after almost 3,000 more people signed on to the Live Register this month.

According to seasonally adjusted figures from the CSO, 446,800 peole signed on in June 2011. A year ago, 441,800 signed on for the month of June and the average unemployment for 2010 was 13.6 per cent.

Of the 2,900 people signing on in June, 2,000 were men. Over the year, the number of female claimants rose by 3.8 per cent, while the level of male claimants dropped slightly and was down 0.3 per cent.

However, the number of long-term claimants has increased over the year, from just over 30 per cent of the total Live Register figure in June 2010 to 40.8 per cent of it this month.

Just under a fifth of those on the Live Register in June 2011 were casual and part-time workers, while those of the ‘craft and related’ occupational group remain the single largest group signing on.
