The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door…

1. #ARREST A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Bogdan Michalkiawicz between 13 and 15 May of this year at Westside Apartments in Letterkenny. The 37-year-old man is being detained at Letterkenny garda station after being arrested yesterday. Gardaí investigating the murder are seeking the public’s assistance.

2. #ROADS A young woman aged 24 was killed after a car hit a truck on the main Westport to Castlebar road just after 9am this morning. A man, who was driving the car, was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. The truck driver was not injured. Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the gardaí.

3. #REFUNDS Concerns have been raised by the National Consumer Agency after Irish Rail announced that customers who used its ticket vending machines between 28 March and 31 May did not have their cards charged. The payments are still due to the company and arrangements are being made for repayment. The glitch impacted more than 9,000 individual cards. The NCA said that more consideration should have been given to the notice passengers received.

4. #PRISON A report by the visiting committee at Cork Prison has said they are concerned at the levels of overcrowding there, which are “constant and unacceptable”. They also criticised the “archaic and Dickensian conditions” in some parts of the prison. Further reports released today on other Irish prisons also noted concerns from visiting committees, while praising the cleanliness of some institutions.

5. #LEPROSY Ireland has recorded its first known case of leprosy in decades. According to the HSE, the man is from outside Ireland and did not contract the disease in this country. The condition is not highly contagious and the disease is usually transmitted by small droplets from the mouth and nose ‘during close and frequent contacts with untreated cases’, the HSE said.
