GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #LIVE REGISTER: The number of people on the live register dropped by 2,300 last month to a total of 437,300, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office. The unemployment rate for July remains unchanged at 14.8 per cent.

2. #ACTION: Staff at Aer Lingus and the Dublin Airport Authority have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action over reduced pension entitlements. The unions involved have said that they are wiling to engage in negotiations but say that they want to send a clear message to the two companies that staff are prepared to act to ensure they secure their pensions.

3. #BRRRR: Met Éireann has confirmed what a lot of us already knew: last month was the coldest and wettest July in years. Rainfall was above average across the country while sunshine levels dropped significantly below average for what is usually one of the warmest months of the year.

4. #LONDON: The heir to the Tetra Pak family fortune has pleaded guilty to delaying the burial of his wife for more than two months after she died in their London home in July. 49-year-old Hans Kristian rausing said he had been “unable to confront the reality” of the death of his wife and tried to act as if it had not happened.

5. #BREAD WARS: The head of McCambridge breadmakers has said he feels vindicated for taking legal action against rival bakers Brennans’ over its use of a ‘copycat product’. The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed an appeal from Brennans’ over the product which looked similar to an existing product by McCambridge.
