Residential care

1. In our main story this morning, Noel Baker reports that there are growing concerns over children being prosecuted for damage to property in residential care placements, including in unregulated Special Emergency Arrangements.

Damage to property caused by young people in residential care settings has likely amounted to almost €2 million between the start of 2022 and the end of June 2025, amid warnings that the nature of some placements may be contributing to violent incidents.

2. Donald Trump has said he will hold talks with “various parties” at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week over this plans to take over Greenland, with the US President also suggesting to reporters that he could impose 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne.

3. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Enterprise Minister Peter Burke will both attend the World Economic Forum this week, with the key focus set to be Trump’s threatened tariffs on countries that oppose his Greenland takeover plans.

4. Campaigners and domestic violence organisations have said that, under the current plans, the length of time an abuser’s name will be listed on the new domestic violence register is not long enough.

5. Minister for Children Norma Foley will this morning present Cabinet with plans to provide State-led not-for-profit early learning facilities.

6. The Government’s action plan to improve the service provided to the public through Irish by the Public Service is set to be published at midday, after Cabinet discusses the document at its weekly meeting today.

8. In London, comedian and actor Russell Brand is set to appear in court charged with two further sexual offences, including rape.
