Cheltenham round-up: Glory for Lossiemouth, as Kargese springs a surprise in the Arkle

Who won the big race of the day?

ALL EYES ON Day One were on the Champion Hurdle as Willie Mullins’ star mare Lossiemouth took her chance in the blue riband event of two-mile hurdling.

Ridden by Paul Townend and sent off the 7/5 favourite, Lossiemouth was imperious, storming up the Prestbury Park hill to beat Brighterdaysahead by six-and-a-half lengths, with The New Lion a further half-length back in third.

Any other big Irish winners?

Lossiemouth was one of only three Irish winners on the opening day.

There was a Willie Mullins 1-2 in the Arkle Novices’ Chase – but not in the order that many would have predicted as 7/1 shot Kargese pulled off a shock in the hands of Danny Mullins to beat fancied stablemate Kopek des Bordes, with pre-race favourite Lulamba back in third.

The other Irish winner came in the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle where Saratoga, ridden by Mark Walsh for trainer Pádraig Roche in the colours of JP McManus, stormed up the straight to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths at odds of 10/1.

That started a brilliant 40 minutes for McManus, celebrating his 75th birthday, as he had first and second in the very next race, the Ultima Handicap Chase, where Johnnywho (18/1) narrowly denied Jagwar (3/1f).

Who had the better day – the bookies or the punters?

The day got off to the worst possible start for the bookies as 15/8 favourite Old Park Star held off Sober Glory and Mydaddypaddy to win the opening Supreme Novices’ Hurdle by a length and a half.

Kargese’s shock win in the Arkle, stunning the hotly-fancied Lulamba and Kopek des Bordes, will certainly have come as a welcome reprieve, but the punters hit back later in the day with no shortage of support for Lossiemouth at a short price, and then for 3/1 favourite Madara in the Plate Handicap Chase.
