The 9 at 9 Trump holds off on reported Iran attack plans, CHI boss to apologise, and a foggy morning ahead.

LAST UPDATE | 19 Jun

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Iran-Israel

1. US President Donald Trump has reportedly approved war plans that include plans of attack on Iran, but has not given final approval for action to be taken.

According to multiple local news outlets, the US President is withholding final approval on the airstrike plans until Iran confirms if it will discuss ending their nuclear programme.

It comes as early-morning strikes from Iran hit a hospital in the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva.

Tattle Life

2. This morning’s long read from reporter Aoife Moore and editor Sinéad O’Carroll reports the full story of how the operator and owner of gossip website Tattle Life was unmasked in an Irish court.

The Journal reported last week that businessman Sebastian Henry Bond was named as the operator after a lengthy court case by a couple in Northern Ireland.

CHI Boss to apologise

3. Children’s Hospitals boss Lucy Nugent is to make multiple apologies before the Oireachtas Health Committee today for practices and failures that have occurred within the group.

Nugent will tell the committee that failures within Children’s Health Ireland have led to “great pain being inflicted upon some of those who were in our care”.

Morning Weather

4. You might notice it’s misty and foggy this morning. A status Yellow fog warning is in place for 20 counties, but temperatures are set to soar this afternoon.

Met Éireann has said the fog will mean poor visibility in places while the warning remains in place. The fog warning will remain in place for the whole of Leinster and Munster, as well as counties Cavan and Monaghan, until 9am.

US Student Visas

5. Foreigners seeking to study in the US will be required to make their social media accounts public to allow immigration officials to screen for anti-American content.

The US State Department confirmed the rule change last night.

UK Abortion

6. A new law which will decriminalise abortion for women in England and Wales terminating their own pregnancies has been passed by the UK House of Commons.

The legislation was sparked by Northern Ireland’s move to decriminalise abortion in 2019.

Housing delays

7. More than €8m was spent on 486 homes before government halted plans to complete the units, The Journal has learned.

Reporter Eoghan Dalton reveals that 1,400 employees had already been assigned to work on the homes for the next 18 months before the housing minister pulled the plug.

Central Bank lowers expectations

8. The Central Bank has lowered its housing expectations for the next few years.

In its new quarterly bulletin on the state of the economy, it forecasts housing completions will hit approximately 32,500 this year, 37,500 next year, and 41,500 in 2027.

It’s a decrease on the figures contained in its last forecast in March.

Fire in Roscommon

9. A man has died following a fire at a home in Frenchpark, Co Roscommon.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of a fire that began shortly after 7.30pm. The man’s body was removed and taken to Galway University Hospital.
