GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know this morning…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL: The Department of Health has denied a report this morning that there is to be a another review of proposed sites for the location of the National Children’s Hospital. RTÉ reported that former Dublin City manager John Fitzgerald had been asked to assess potential locations but a spokesperson for the Department told TheJournal.ie this was not the case.

2. #SWITCH-OFF: The analogue television signal is to be switched off this morning at 10am. The much-anticipated digital switchover means that from that time the old analogue signal will go blank. Here’s what you need to do if you haven’t yet made the switch.

3. #ALAN RYAN: A man has been charged in connection with the murder of Alan Ryan in September. The man in his 30s was arrested last night and is due to appear before a court in Dublin today. Ryan, who was known for his links to the Real IRA, was shot dead in Clongriffin in Dublin on 3 September.

4. #HEALTH INSURANCE: A series of hikes are being planned by a number of health insurance companies – including VHI, Laya, Aviva, and Glo – in the New Year, the Irish Independent report this morning. Charlie Weston writes that the average family will have to pay €300 extra year for health cover.

5. #US 2012: After concluding their final debate on Monday night, US president Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have kicked-off two weeks of campaigning across the United States in key swing stages that will decide the outcome of November’s poll. Opinion polls are now indicating that it could be one of the closest elections in US history.

6. #COURTS: A 12-year-old girl is suing her parents after she was seriously injured in a road crash in which her sister and a friend died five years ago. Many of the papers carry the story of Faith Varden-Carberry taking action against her family including her mother who has already served a six year jail sentence for dangerous driving causing the death of two girls.

7. #RAPE: A candidate for the US senate has sparked controversy after saying that pregnancies caused by rape “were something God intended to happen”. Republican hopeful Richard Murdouck was defending his opposition to abortion when he said: “I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

8. #JOBSWATCH: Two separate jobs announcements by IDA Ireland and the government will see 60 new jobs created. Two US companies are creating the jobs in Cork and Galway over the next three years.

9. #IPAD MINI: Apple unveiled a new and smaller iPad last night with the device hailed by the company as being one you could hold with one hand. But Silicon Valley watchers have given the device a cool reception, according to The Telegraph.
