1. #DNA DATABASE: The government is to launch details of a new DNA database today with legislative proposals to include a requirement that sex offenders have their DNA registered on a new database. Criminals convicted of serious crimes and suspects in serious criminal investigations will also be compelled to provide their DNA.

2. #JUNIOR CERT: Nearly 60,000 teenagers are getting their Junior Certificate results this morning with over 10 per cent of candidates in the core subjects of English, Irish and Maths getting A grades in the higher level papers. The numbers are roughly the same at ordinarily level.

3. #CREDIT UNION: Merging credit unions in Newbridge and Naas will result in ‘colossal’ losses a former committee member of the campaign to save Newbridge Credit Union has warned. Frank White claims that nearly €40 million in deposits have been withdrawn since a special manager was appointed.

4. #CYCLING: A public consultation has been launched on plans to create cycle network across the greater Dublin area. Proposals would treble the existing system of cycling lanes and paths in urban areas from 500km to 1,485km in length. Take a look here.

5. #OBAMA: US President Barack Obama believes it is too early to say if a Russian plan to secure Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile will stop America from intervening in the region. He was speaking in an address to the nation overnight when he said the US could not ignore chemical weapons attacks on Syrian people.

6. #JUNIOR DOCTORS: With strike action looming, the Irish Medical Organisation and the HSE will meet for talks at the Labour Relations Commission today in an attempt to resolve the dispute over lengthy working hours for junior doctors in Irish hospitals.

7. #DÁIL REFORM: The Oireachtas committee hearings that were held during the debate on the abortion bill could become commonplace under reform proposals being considered by government. The Irish Times reports that under proposals to be considered at Cabinet today members of the public and experts could be involved in discussions prior to the drafting of legislation.

8. #NEW YORK: New York has its Democratic and Republican nominees for mayor ahead of a November election. Democrat Bill de Blasio topped his primary, avoiding a run-off, and will now face Republican Joe Lhota in the race to succeed Michael Bloomberg.The results came overnight as the city prepares to remember 9/11.

9. #TRAP: The Football Association of Ireland has confirmed it is now consdering Giovanni Trapattoni’s position as the national team’s boss in the wake of last night’s defeat to Austria. Ireland will almost certainly miss out on next year’s World Cup and there is a significant clamour for the Italian to be sacked after five years in charge.
