AS PART OF a mission to map the Irish coastline, geographers from Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) have been getting dropped onto isolated headlands and islands in the Atlantic Ocean by Air Corps helicopters.
The outings provide vital data for Operation Baseline, a project to modernise maps for Irish territorial waters.
The LÉ Orla, which also helps out, was acting as a rescue boat for an excursion on Monday when naval officer Stuart Donaldson took this photo, showing an Air Corps winchman being lowered onto rocks off Blacksod Bay in Mayo.
Following him was an OSI geographer, tasked with marking the area’s co-ordinates.
Not a bad office view.
