Featuring a new way to shop, a slick app that helps keep your life organised and one of the best photo editing apps out there.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

We’re going to assume that you already have a lot of the most popular apps, so let us do the hard work for you and pick out the latest apps that are deserving of your time.

This week includes a new way to shop, a slick app that helps keep your life organised and one of the best photo editing apps out there.

Any.do Cal
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

Why should I care?

- If you’re an iOS user, chances are you’re not a fan of what Apple did with calendar in its latest update.
- Cal is not only an improvement on both iOS and Android’s calendars, it’s also very pretty looking.
- Swipe gestures, large photos and easy navigation means you won’t actually mind scheduling events.
- Also syncs with its other task app, Any.do (also available for iOS and Android) so you can really keep on top of things.
- This is the part where Android widgets really comes in handy. Set it up on your lock screen and you’ll never forget an appointment again.

VSCO Cam
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

Why should I care?

- Do you take photos? Then of course you should care about this, especially if you’re Android.
- Minimalist design hides what is actually a very powerful set of editing tools.
- Special mention goes to its filters or ‘Presets’. These aren’t like Instagram, these are professional grade filters you’re using.
- There’s also VSCO Grid, which is all about viewing and admiring photos. Apparently it’s coming to mobile too which is a good thing.
- It might take a little getting used to but if you’re any way serious about your photos, it will be worth it.

Around Me
For: Windows Phone
Cost: Free

Why should I care?

- Think Soundwave crossed with Instagram and you’re on the right track.
- All photos have metadata saying where the photo was taken. Around Me takes this and show you photos taken in the area.
- Search tool allows you to check the area close to you, should you be looking for any scenic spots.
- Photos from Flickr, Instagram and 500px and Panoramio are shown as well.
- If there’s a photo you really like, you can set it as your lockscreen background.

Mallzee
For: iOS
Cost: Free

Why should I care?

- Considering it’s *that* time of year (and coming up to the January sales), clothes shopping is probably going to come up sooner or later
- Mallzee takes mobile shopping and gives it its own twist by factoring in your friends’ opinion.
- Find something you like and pick your friends to get their opinion.
- If they approve, then you’re free to buy it. If they don’t, the app prevents you from buying it.
- The more you use it, the better it gets.

SidePlayer
For: Android
Cost: Free, €1.29 for pro version

Why should I care?

- Majority of music players for Android require you to either go into the app or bring down the notification bar to access it.
- SidePlayer gives you a minimalist floating panel for you to control any music players.
- Swipe from the right edge of the screen to bring it up & again to hide it.
- Light version is rather limited but the pro version only costs €1.29
- Pro version gives you more scope for customisation, you can practically change every feature if you wish.image(Image: SidePlayer/Google Play)
