IT HAS JUST been announced that Ireland’s presidential election will take place on Friday, 24 October.
So far, the only confirmed candidates on the ballot are Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys – who was announced as the party’s nominee today.
However, a number of other high-profile figures have been linked to the Áras race, such as Michael Flatley, former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin and most recently, Bob Geldof.
Geldof, best known as the lead singer of The Boomtown Rats, told the Irish Independent he is undecided about entering the race. He revealed that he had a 15-minute phone call with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, during which the presidency was the main topic.
While Geldof said he was “flattered that people believe me capable of executing the job,” he added that he is unsure whether he actually would like to run.
