Harris yesterday condemned "vile and horrific threats" made against a "close family member".

Multiple bomb threats made against Tánaiste Simon Harris’s home, armed gardaí at scene

The threats made against Harris and his family today follow two other reported threats made against members of the Tánaiste’s family online.

LAST UPDATE | 7 Sep 2025

MULTIPLE BOMB THREATS against the Co Wicklow home of Tánaiste Simon Harris have been phoned in to garda stations today, The Journal understands.

The threats were made by multiple people. They appear to have been coordinated by people using a messaging app. Gardaí are currently investigating the threats made against the Tánaiste’s home.

It is understood that Harris and his family are not present at the property, where armed gardaí and the Garda Dog unit are on site.

The threats made against Harris and his family today follow two other reported threats, both made against members of the Tánaiste’s family online.

On Tuesday, a woman arrested over a serious threat made online against Harris and his family was released without charge.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and investigations remain ongoing, gardaí said.

Meanwhile, Harris yesterday condemned “vile and horrific threats” made against a “close family member” on Friday night.

In a statement issued yesterday, he said threats against his family are having “deeply distressing consequences” and follow a “sinister” pattern with the motivation to intimidate him from public office.

“I have faced the rough and tumble of politics. I believe in robust debate, scrutiny, and challenge. It is a cornerstone of our democracy.

“But what I and my family have faced in recent weeks is not political debate. It is abuse. It is intimidation. It is behaviour that should never, ever be treated as normal. And no one is to blame except those choosing to abuse and make threats.”

Harris said that over the coming days and weeks he will consult with his party, government, and broader political colleagues about what action can be taken in the face of online intimidation.

“Someone has to call a halt. Protecting my family will remain my number one priority. I will be guided by them on the next steps.”

Harris, who is also Minister for Defence, Foreign Affairs and Trade, has already been at the centre of significant security concerns. Protests have been held at his home in County Wicklow and there has been a large amount of online threats published on various online platforms.

Harris travels with a significant garda protection detail. As revealed by The Journal his home has a 24 hour armed post and threats are closely monitored by State intelligence services. His detail is at a similar level to a sitting Taoiseach.
