THE US EMBASSY has warned American citizens living in or visiting Ireland about protests in the capital city.
In a security message sent earlier today, the Embassy told residents and tourists that local police are preparing for protests in response to the 2014 Budget announcement by the government.
“US citizens should avoid the Leinster House area this afternoon,” the statement said.
Even protests intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of protests, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
Despite the warning, only a small crowd turned up to protest outside the Dáil following the Budget 2014 announcement.
Gardaí estimated about 100 people gathered to demonstrate against austerity measures. No arrests or any incidents have been reported.
Extra garda presence had been deployed today in anticipation of rallies.
