How BusConnects is making travel around Dublin easier

Progress continues with the start of construction on the Liffey Valley to City Centre Scheme.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE BUSCONNECTS programme is set to enter a major new phase this month.

The programme is designed to connect people and places through an enhanced bus system, via integration with other public transport initiatives that links communities to the city centre. Alongside improved cycling and pedestrian facilities throughout Dublin, BusConnects aims to enhance quality of life by delivering a safer and more sustainable transport system. These improvements support the Government’s Climate Action Plan and will contribute to a healthier and greener urban environment across the Greater Dublin Area (GDA).

By prioritising dedicated bus lanes and improving overall reliability, BusConnects aims to make public transport a more attractive choice for daily travel. These improvements are designed to provide a smoother experience for commuters, towards a more connected and sustainable city.

A major milestone is being reached this autumn with the beginning of the Liffey Valley to City Centre Core Bus Corridor Scheme. This planned route will commence at the new Liffey Valley Shopping Centre bus interchange, an established commercial and retail hub.

From there, buses using the corridor will serve Ballyfermot Village before heading along Ballyfermot Road and Sarsfield Road, turning right at the junction with Con Colbert Road before turning right again onto Grattan Crescent. At the intersection of Grattan Crescent and Emmet Road, the scheme will travel along Emmet Road before making its way through Old Kilmainham and James’ Street. Buses will make their way into the city centre through Thomas Street and Cornmarket Street before finally reaching its destination at Winetavern Street, near Christchurch.

Once complete, the Liffey Valley to City Centre Core Bus Corridor will improve the reliability and frequency of bus services along the route through the provision of a total of 18.4km of bus priority in both directions. Passenger numbers are expected to increase by 58% on the route, supported by faster, more reliable journeys and a significant reduction in delays. Walking and cycling are also projected to increase by 45%, thanks to the inclusion of 13.3 kilometres of improved cycling infrastructure and enhanced pedestrian facilities.

Planning permission has been granted for all 12 Core Bus Corridor Schemes throughout the Greater Dublin Area, which includes the provision of approximately 230km of designated bus lanes and 200km of cycle tracks. By transforming the bus system and improving cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, BusConnects will make it easier for everyone to choose sustainable modes of transport, helping to create a more connected, accessible, and liveable Dublin.
