TWO OF IRELAND’S biggest car insurers have announced that they will no longer be insuring older cars.
In statements today, Aviva Insurance and Allianz Insurance have both said that they are set to adopt the new policy.
Allianz and Aviva have announced that they will no longer be providing quotes for cars that are aged 14 years or older and 15 years or older respectively.
Reasons
Aviva has said that it is basing this decision on experience in the sector and by doing so is “protecting our broader customer base and our ability to offer sustainable and competitive motor insurance premiums in Ireland.”
The company goes on to say that they have, “an obligation to take account of our claims and underwriting experience to ensure we are there to protect our customers in the long term.”
Allianz has stated that it is introducing its more restrictive policy because, “where older cars are involved, personal injury frequencies are higher.”
Cars already on the roads
Both companies will continue to offer insurance to existing customers who own cars that exceed these limits.
This move could impact on a large number of road users. Last year the Society of the Irish Motor Industry warned that the average age of a car in Ireland was set to rise above 10 years in 2015.
